D vs DD Cup: What Is the Difference and Which Size Are You?

Reviewed by Dhriti ChopraBrand Manager, Krvvy

Key Takeaways

  • A DD cup is one size bigger than a D cup. It is not double the size.
  • A D cup means your bust is about four inches bigger than your underbust. A DD means about five inches.
  • On the same band, a DD expects about one inch (2.5 cm) more at the bust than a D.
  • A D and a DD on different bands can hold the same volume. A 36D and a 34DD are sister sizes.
  • Spill at the top or sides of a D cup points to a DD. A gap at the top of a DD cup can point to a D.
  • On Krvvy's chart a DD lands in one Krvvy size, while a D often spans two, so Find My Size helps most at D.

What is the difference between a D and a DD cup?

The difference is one cup size, which works out to about one inch at the bust. A D cup means your bust measures about four inches more than your ribcage just below it. A DD cup means it measures about five inches more. So a 34D expects a bust of around 38 inches and a 34DD expects around 39 inches, on the same 34 band.

Each cup letter adds roughly an inch to the gap between your two measurements. A is one inch, B is two, C is three, D is four and DD is five. Our guide to bra cup sizes from A to D explains how that ladder works.

The name is what confuses people. "Double D" sounds like twice a D. It is a single step up, exactly the same size of step as going from C to D.

Which is bigger, D or DD?

DD is bigger than D by one cup. On the same band, a DD cup is a little deeper and a little wider. You feel the difference most at the top edge of the cup and at the sides near your underarm.

DD is also bigger than C, by two cups. A 34C expects a bust of about 37 inches and a 34DD expects about 39. If you are moving from a C to a DD, the jump is bigger than it looks on the label.

Above DD comes DDD in US sizing or E in UK sizing. Our DDD cup size guide covers that next step.

D vs DD in inches and cm

The table below compares D and DD on the same band. In each pair the band stays the same and the bust grows by about an inch.

Band D cup bust DD cup bust
32 36 in (91 cm) 37 in (94 cm)
34 38 in (97 cm) 39 in (99 cm)
36 40 in (102 cm) 41 in (104 cm)
38 42 in (107 cm) 43 in (109 cm)
40 44 in (112 cm) 45 in (114 cm)

An inch is not much on a tape measure, so it is easy to sit right on the line between the two. Half an inch either way can move you from one to the other, which is why fit matters as much as the number.

How do I know if I am a D or a DD?

Measure first. Wear an unpadded bra or no bra, and stand straight with your arms relaxed. Wrap a soft tape snugly around your ribcage just under your breasts for your underbust. Then wrap it loosely around the fullest part of your bust. Take one from the other. Four inches points to a D and five inches points to a DD.

If you land between the two, at around four and a half inches, measure again on another day. Breast size shifts through the menstrual cycle, and a single reading can mislead. Our step-by-step measuring guide and the underbust and overbust guide show where each tape should sit.

Then check how your current bra fits. You probably need a DD if your D cups cut in at the top edge, if breast tissue sits outside the cup at the sides, or if the centre panel between the cups lifts away from your chest. You probably need a D if your DD cups wrinkle or leave a gap at the top while the band fits well.

Gaps are not always about size. Some cups are cut fuller at the bottom and others fuller at the top, so a gap can come from shape alone. Try a different style in the same size before you drop a cup.

Why D and DD are so easy to mix up

One common reason is the band. A band that is too loose makes your cup letter look smaller on paper. If you wear a 36D and the band climbs your back, you may actually be a 34DD. The cups hold the same volume, but the tighter band supports you better.

Padding is the second reason. Measuring over a padded bra adds to the bust figure and can push a D reading up into DD territory. Always measure over an unpadded bra or bare skin.

Brands are the third. UK and US sizing agree on D and DD, but EU sizing has no DD, so an EU E is the same cup as a UK DD. If a bra was sized for Europe, a DD may appear as an E on the label.

D, DD and sister sizes

Sister sizes hold the same cup volume on a different band. Go down one band and up one cup, or up one band and down one cup. That rule links D and DD directly.

A 36D and a 34DD are sister sizes. So are a 34D and a 32DD, and a 38D and a 36DD. In each pair the cup volume matches, but the band on the DD is two inches tighter.

This explains a lot of D versus DD confusion. Two women can hold the same volume of breast tissue, and one wears a D while the other wears a DD, purely because their ribcages measure differently. Neither size is bigger in any real sense. The band is what tells them apart. Our 36C guide shows the same idea with a 36C and a 34DD.

34D vs 34DD

This is the most searched pair. Both share a 34 band, so the only change is the cup. A 34D expects a bust of about 38 inches and a 34DD about 39 inches. In centimetres that is roughly 97 cm against 99 cm.

The sister sizes differ by one step too. A 34D sits alongside 32DD and 36C. A 34DD sits alongside 32DDD and 36D. Our 34DD bra size guide covers 34DD in full, including how it fits on Krvvy's chart.

What "D-DD" on a label means

Some bras are sold in combined cup sizes such as D-DD or D/DD. These are usually stretch styles, like seamless bras and bralettes, where the fabric gives enough to fit both cups on the same band. They are useful when you sit right on the line between the two.

Structured bras with moulded cups and underwire are less forgiving. Their cups hold a fixed shape, so getting the cup letter right matters more.

What D vs DD means for your Krvvy size

Krvvy bras are sold in letter sizes, from M to 4X in most styles. Each size on our bra size chart covers a range of underbust and bust measurements, and those ranges were set with about five inches between them. That matches a DD.

So a DD lands neatly in one Krvvy size. A 34DD reads XL on both numbers. A D cup has a four-inch gap, so it often spans two sizes. A 34D reads XL on the band and L on the bust. We would rather say that plainly than guess. If you measure as a D, put both of your numbers into Find My Size and check the size chart on the product page before you order.

Choosing a bra when you are between D and DD

If you sit right between the two, stretch helps. Seamless cups with some give adapt to small changes, including the ones your body goes through in a month. The Feel-Good Everyday Bra is seamless with four-way stretch.

Moulded cups need a more exact fit, because they keep their shape whatever is inside them. If you choose one, such as the Flawless Fit T-Shirt Bra, size by your fuller measurement so the cup does not cut in.

If you are firmly a DD and want more structure for long days, the Trueform Support Bra was designed for C to F cups. Brands such as Enamor, Zivame and Clovia also sell D and DD styles, and each publishes its own chart, so compare the measurements rather than the letters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DD bigger than D?

Yes, by one cup. A D cup is a four-inch difference between bust and underbust, and a DD is a five-inch difference. On the same band, a DD cup is slightly deeper and wider than a D.

How much bigger is a DD than a D?

About one inch, or 2.5 cm, at the bust on the same band. A 34D expects a bust of around 38 inches and a 34DD expects around 39 inches. The band stays the same.

How do I know if I am a D or a DD?

Measure your underbust snugly and your bust loosely, then take one from the other. Four inches points to a D and five to a DD. If your D cups cut in at the top or spill at the sides, try a DD. If your DD cups leave a gap at the top while the band fits, try a D.

Is 36D the same as 34DD?

They hold the same cup volume, so they are sister sizes. The 34DD has a band two inches tighter. If your 36D band rides up your back while the cups fit, a 34DD may support you better.

Is DD bigger than C?

Yes, by two cups. A C cup is a three-inch difference between bust and underbust and a DD is a five-inch difference. On a 34 band, that is a bust of about 37 inches for a C against about 39 inches for a DD.

What does D-DD mean on a bra label?

It means the bra is made to fit both D and DD cups on the same band. Combined sizes are usually used for stretch styles such as seamless bras and bralettes, where the fabric gives enough to suit either cup.
