DD Cup Size: What It Means, Measurements and Your Krvvy Size

DD Cup Size: What It Means, Measurements and Your Krvvy Size

Reviewed by Dhriti ChopraBrand Manager, Krvvy

Key Takeaways

  • A DD cup means your bust measures about 5 inches (12.5 cm) more than your underbust.
  • DD is one cup size up from D. It does not mean double the size of a D.
  • The letter only makes sense with the band number. A 32DD and a 38DD hold very different volumes.
  • DD means the same thing in UK and US sizing. Above DD the two systems split, so an E in one brand may not match an E in another.
  • Sister sizes share the same cup volume on a different band, so 34DD sits alongside 32DDD (UK 32E) and 36D.
  • On Krvvy's size chart DD sizes line up neatly: 32DD is an L, 34DD is an XL and 36DD is a 2X.

What does DD cup size mean?

DD cup size means the fullest part of your bust measures about five inches more than your ribcage just below it. If your underbust is 34 inches and your bust is 39 inches, that five-inch gap makes you a 34DD. The 34 is the band. The DD is the cup.

Every cup letter adds roughly one inch to that gap. An A cup is a one-inch difference, B is two, C is three and D is four. DD comes next at five. Our guide to bra cup sizes from A to D walks through the whole ladder if you want the earlier steps.

The name causes a lot of confusion. "Double D" sounds like twice a D, but it is a single step up, the same as going from B to C. It is simply the label that sits between D and the next cup, which brands call DDD or E depending on where they size.

Is a DD cup big?

The honest answer is that the letter on its own cannot tell you. Cup size describes the difference between two measurements, so the actual volume a DD cup holds depends on the band it sits on.

A 30DD has a bust measurement of about 35 inches. A 38C has a bust measurement of about 41 inches. The 38C is the larger bust by six inches, even though C comes before DD. That is why two women who both wear a DD can look and feel very different in the same style of bra.

It also explains a common mix-up. A band that is too loose makes the cup letter look smaller on paper, so a woman who measures as a 34DD can easily end up buying a 36C or 36D for years. If your band rides up your back and your cups feel full, it is worth measuring again before you buy your next bra.

DD cup size in inches and cm

The table below shows DD sizes from 30DD to 40DD with the measurements each one expects and the matching size on Krvvy's own chart. Your bust can sit about half an inch either side of the figure shown.

Size Underbust Bust Krvvy size
30DD 30 in (76 cm) 35 in (89 cm) M
32DD 32 in (81 cm) 37 in (94 cm) L
34DD 34 in (86 cm) 39 in (99 cm) XL
36DD 36 in (91 cm) 41 in (104 cm) 2X
38DD 38 in (97 cm) 43 in (109 cm) 3X
40DD 40 in (102 cm) 45 in (114 cm) 4X

The underbust figure is measured with the tape snug against your ribcage. If it lands on an odd number, round up to the next even number. An underbust of 33 inches becomes a 34 band.

How to measure yourself for a DD

You need a soft tape measure and a few minutes. Wear an unpadded bra or no bra at all, since padding adds to the bust figure and can push you a cup or two higher than you are.

Stand straight with your arms relaxed. Wrap the tape around your ribcage just under your breasts, keep it level all the way round and pull it snug. That number is your underbust. Then wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust, usually across the nipples, and keep it level but loose enough that it does not press in. That number is your bust.

Take the underbust away from the bust. A result of five inches points to a DD. If your two breasts differ slightly, which is very common, measure across the fuller side.

Measure twice, a few days apart if you can. Breast size shifts through the menstrual cycle, and a single measurement on a fuller day can mislead you. Our step-by-step guide to measuring your bra size covers each step with more detail, and the underbust and overbust guide explains exactly where each tape should sit.

DD vs D, and DD vs E

A D cup is a four-inch difference and a DD is a five-inch difference, so DD is the bigger of the two by one cup. On the same band, a DD cup is a little deeper and a little wider. Most women feel the difference at the top and sides of the cup, where a D that is too small starts to cut in or spill.

The E is where things get messy. In UK sizing the ladder runs D, DD, E, F, FF, G, so an E is a six-inch difference. In US sizing the ladder runs D, DD, DDD, and many American brands label the five-inch cup as "DD/E". That means a US E can be the same as a UK DD, while a UK E matches a US DDD.

Indian brands mostly use the familiar band numbers with A to D cups, then vary once they go above D. Enamor, Zivame and Clovia each publish their own charts, and it is worth checking each one rather than assuming an E means the same thing everywhere.

DD sister sizes

Sister sizes hold the same cup volume on a different band. The rule is simple: go down one band size and up one cup, or up one band size and down one cup. Each band step is two inches.

For a 34DD, the sisters are 32DDD (written as 32E in UK sizing) and 36D. For a 32DD they are 30DDD and 34D. For a 36DD they are 34DDD and 38D.

Sister sizes help when the cups fit but the band does not. If a 34DD band feels tight, a 36D gives you the same cup volume with more room around the ribcage. They are a way to make a small adjustment. A band that is two inches looser will give you less support, so a sister size is not a free second size.

Finding your Krvvy size as a DD

Krvvy bras are sold in letter sizes rather than band and cup. Most styles run from M to 4X, and the Ultrasoft Bralette runs from S to 3X. Each Krvvy size covers a range of underbust and bust measurements, which you can see on our bra size chart.

The spread between the underbust and bust ranges on each Krvvy size is about five inches. That happens to be the DD gap, so DD sizes fall cleanly into one Krvvy size each, as the table above shows. A 34DD measures into XL on both numbers.

If your two measurements land in different Krvvy sizes, use Find My Size. It takes both numbers and suggests the size that suits the style you are looking at. Moulded cups and stretch bralettes fit slightly differently, so check the size chart on the product page too.

What to look for in a bra when you wear a DD

Most of a bra's support comes from the band, so start there. A band that sits level and snug, with room to slide two fingers underneath, carries the weight and takes the pressure off your shoulders. Wider side wings help the band stay flat and keep breast tissue inside the cup at the sides.

Straps should sit without digging in. If they leave deep marks by evening, the band is usually too loose and the straps are doing work they were never meant to do. Cups should hold all of your breast tissue with no gap at the top and no spill at the sides or underarm.

For everyday wear, a bra designed for fuller cups makes this easier. The Trueform Support Bra was designed for C to F cups, with the structure placed where fuller busts tend to need it. Under fitted tops, a smoother cup matters more. The Flawless Fit T-Shirt Bra has moulded cups and a soft underwire, so it holds its shape without showing lines through a T-shirt.

Wire-free bras can work well with a DD as long as the band is right. They hold more gently, so they suit lighter days and time at home better than a long day on your feet. The Ultrasoft Bralette is a comfortable choice for those hours.

Common DD fit problems

Some fit problems are easy to read once you know what they mean. A band that rides up your back is too big. Try going down a band and up a cup, so a 36D becomes a 34DD. Breast tissue spilling over the top or sides of the cup means the cup is too small, so go up a cup on the same band.

Gaps at the top of the cup can mean the cup is too big. They can also mean the shape does not suit you, since some cups are cut fuller at the bottom and others fuller at the top. The centre panel between the cups should lie flat against your chest. If it lifts away, the cups are usually too small.

If you recognise several of these at once, our guide to the signs you are wearing the wrong bra size will help you work out which number to change.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many inches is a DD cup?

A DD cup is a difference of about five inches, or around 12.5 cm, between your bust and your underbust. For example, an underbust of 32 inches with a bust of 37 inches gives you a 32DD. The cup letter always depends on that gap rather than on the bust measurement alone.

Is DD the same as E?

It depends on the sizing system. In UK sizing an E comes after DD and is one cup bigger. Many US brands label the same five-inch cup as DD or DD/E, which makes a US E equal to a UK DD. Check the size chart of the brand you are buying from before assuming they match.

What is bigger, D or DD?

DD is bigger by one cup. A D cup is a four-inch difference between bust and underbust, while a DD is a five-inch difference. On the same band, a DD cup is slightly deeper and wider.

What size is a 34DD in Krvvy?

A 34DD is an XL on Krvvy's size chart. Its underbust of about 34 inches and bust of about 39 inches both fall within the XL range. If your measurements sit right at the edge of a range, use Find My Size to check.

Can I wear a wire-free bra with a DD cup?

Yes. Wire-free bras can support a DD well when the band fits snugly and the cups are cut deep enough. They tend to hold more gently than wired styles, so many women keep them for lighter days or for home, and wear a more structured bra for long days.

Why does my DD fit differently in different brands?

Brands use different size ladders above D and cut their cups in different shapes. A DD in one brand may match a DD/E or an E in another. Cup shape, fabric stretch and band firmness all change how a size feels, so measuring and checking each brand's chart is more reliable than buying by letter alone.

Is double D the same as DD?

Yes. Double D and DD are two names for the same cup size. It is one cup up from D and one cup below DDD in US sizing, or below E in UK sizing.
